Best Places to Enjoy with Your Dog in Indy

While I love Indianapolis, it is not as overtly dog-crazed as other towns I have lived in or visited. That doesn’t mean you and your dog can’t have a blast in Indy! The fun is here if you know where to look. To take the guess work out of it for you, I am sharing some great spots to get you started:

  1. Marott Park (Broad Ripple)
  2. The Monon (Carmel)
  3. Eagle Creek Park (West side)
  4. Flowing Well Park (Carmel)

Marott Park (Broad Ripple)

Located just north of Broad Ripple (off College Avenue), Marott Park is a gem for humans and dogs alike. My pup loves listening for squirrels and rabbits, plus the river is good to splash in (I wouldn’t recommend letting your dog drink from it however). The shade is a big plus on hot summer days!

The Monon (Carmel)

Recently, I was frustrated at the lack of places my dog can swim or have access to water during summer runs. The water doesn’t seem safe in most areas. Then I realized that the Monon offers drinking fountains and shaded terrain. I brought my dog’s collapsible water bowl and she loved the change of scenery. If you make it up to Carmel, veer east for a stop at the Central Dog Park or Woof Gang Bakery.

Eagle Creek Park (West side)

Drive to the west side if you’re looking for a more rugged walk or run with your dog. Eagle Creek Park is dog-friendly (dog must be leashed) and offers some key water fountains near restrooms. Bring that collapsible dog bowl so your pup can stay hydrated. Fall weather brings relief from the sun, but even in the summer: Much of Eagle Creek is shaded.

Please note: The water at Eagle Creek Park (including the swim beach) is currently (summer 2025) unsafe to swim in (or drink). Do not let your dog swim down there, no matter how much he/she wants to. Bring your own water and/or utilize the drinking fountains.

Flowing Well Park (Carmel)

If you’re on the north side of Carmel, don’t miss this hidden spot! The Cool Creek will offer fun exploration for your dog. As the park’s name indicates, there’s also a flowing well with safe water your pup can drink if he or she is thirsty. There is only a mile of trails in the park itself, but you can easily walk or run in the nearby areas. This is the only certified cold spring in central Indiana, as well.

Willing to Drive? These Options are a Bit Further. . .

If you have more time, I highly recommend getting out to Morgan Monroe State Forest. There are a few excellent creeks and lakes (Ex. Brian Lake is a solid choice) that you can enjoy during your trail adventures. You will also find fewer crowds! If you’re headed to Bloomington, stop at Lake Lemon which is a fan-favorite of dog owners.

If you are a dog parent looking for a fun afternoon with your pup, I hope you will take this opportunity to explore some new places this season. You will make treasured memories, and you’ll absolutely make your pup’s day!

Love,

Hannah

Ps. Which spots would you add to the list? Let me know! I’m always looking for new places to explore!
