Guess What? You aren’t in Control

If you’ve read more than one of my blog posts, you’ve realized I am not good at transitions. Nope. Not a specialty of mine. Which transitions, you ask?

Change in location
Change in family
Change in friends
Change in routine
Change in tradition

That’s just the top five. Basically, I’m an adventurous soul, but I like having my home base. I like the constancy of my home, the people who surround me, and the ways we celebrate life. And who can really fault me for that?

So transitional periods are major growing points for me, and my faith. Right now, for instance: I’m transitioning away from college, collegiate running, and financial support from my parents. I’m launching like a weak little leaf, desperate to catch the wind and do something eternally impactful with my life. But gosh: It is hard!

I’m spending hours on the phone with WIFI companies, I’m trying to keep up with the lives of friends who are still in college, I’m ruling my own life.

Only, I’m not.

And that, my friends, is the biggest comfort in it all. Hallelujah, God had the foresight not to let me run my own existence– as entertaining as that train wreck might have been. As daunting as some of this gain, loss, and responsibility feels: It is not mine to bear.

In Matthew 11, Jesus says: “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you shall find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Yes! Doesn’t that just make your heart leap?! We aren’t calling all the shots, guys. Sure, that can make our prideful hearts seize up a bit. But trust me: We’ve got an excellent deal. We have pure, unadulterated freedom AND we have a God who guides us, grows us, and is working for our eternal good.

You aren’t the end of the line. Let that take some of the pressure off you today. I think it is very easy to let ourselves get choked with the responsibilities and weight of this world. Yet, Matthew 11 reminds us that at the end of it all: We are His. And friends: God cares for His children.
